Meet Tom Doolan
Hello. My name is Tom Doolan and I am a
Democrat running for U.S. Representative in the Florida 5th Congressional District.
The reasons that I have for running are many. I believe in the American political system. I believe
in our democratic form of government and the concept of fairness and equality to all citizens. I believe
in the democratic society that is the core of this country. I believe in the fundamental greatness of the
American people. The ingenuity of our people will see us to the answers for tomorrow.
Growing up in a blue-collar, working-class neighborhood in southwest Chicago, my mother and father were
hard working people who instilled their work ethic in me. At the early age of 13 my first job was
cleaning trailers. Thirty years later I am still going strong.
My parents also taught me the importance of an education and the need for a college degree. I attended
public schools through most of my academic career. In 1988, I graduated from Northern Illinois University
where I received my BA in Criminal Justice/Sociology. It was an extremely proud moment for my parents due
to the fact that I was the first person in my entire family to earn a college degree. One year later, I
went on to earn my Illinois paralegal certification from Roosevelt University in Chicago, Illinois. At
that point I began my now 20 year legal career. In 2004, at age 38, I applied and was accepted into
Florida A&M University's College of Law in Orlando, Florida. Juggling a family, full-time employment
and law school was no easy task but I feel that if you have enough drive and focus you can accomplish
anything. That philosophy propelled me forward and in 2007, I earned my law degree.
When I came to Florida in 1995, I carried with me the high professional standards that I learned in
the large firms that I had the opportunity to work for in Chicago. My knowledge and experience within
a number of legal disciplines allowed me to transition my career into the Orlando legal community.
